The tankini combines a tank top and a bikini bottom. It provides the cover of a one piece, with the convenience of a two piece suit, as only the bottoms need not be removed in order to use the toilet. They are flexible as you can mix and match tops and bottoms.
Tankini and the concept of mix-and-match swimwears were the two major innovations in the late 1990s. Designer Anne Cole was the originator of this style. Hailed as the first major innovation in women's swimsuit design in several decades, the tankini quickly captured nearly a third of the swimwear market and the popularity of tankini largely came from Cole's tapping into women's anxieties about swimwear.[
